Bill Clinton returns to Haiti to oversee aid relief

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) — former President Clinton, charged with overseeing the United Nations aid mission, returned to Haiti on Friday to meet with Haitian leaders, visit a clinic and deliver supplies, his foundation said.

Clinton, the U.N. special envoy for Haiti, went to the Port-au-Prince headquarters of the judicial police where the government has set up temporary offices after last month’s deadly earthquake. there, he is meeting with government and U.N. officials.

Clinton got the added responsibility Wednesday of overseeing U.N. aid efforts and reconstruction in that country after the magnitude-7.0 earthquake devastated the capital and surrounding areas January 12.

More than 200,000 people were killed, the Haitian government has said.

“More than three weeks after the earthquake, the relief efforts in Haiti have been increasing to meet staggering needs, but the long road to recovery has just begun,” Clinton said in a statement.

He traveled to Haiti two weeks ago, days after the quake, to meet with Haitian and U.N. officials. he also delivered food and water, as well as medical supplies, solar flashlights, portable radios and generators, the William J. Clinton Foundation said.

“I will return to Port-au-Prince for the second time since the disaster to unload supplies and talk to Haitian officials to ensure assistance continues to be effective, coordinated and sustained in the weeks and months to come,” Clinton said before reaching Haiti.

President Obama asked Clinton and former President George W. Bush to raise money for relief and recovery in Haiti. The two former presidents established the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund in response.

Its goal is to “identify and fulfill unmet needs in the region, foster economic opportunity, improve the quality of life of those affected over the long term and assist the people of Haiti as they build back better,” the statement said.
